    7th Sep 2004Kuranda Scenic Railway
The Kuranda Scenic Railway operates a predominently tourist rail service between Cairns and Kuranda, 34km distant. The service is operated by Queensland Rail locos with heritage carriages, some dating back to the opening of the line in 1891. The line climbs to 328 metres above sea level at Kuranda and passes through lush rainforest, across dozens of bridges and through 15 tunnels. En route it passes the Barron Falls which in the rainy season offer visitors an amazing spectacle. Kuranda Station is a listed building and is beautifully maintained and adorned with masses of plants and hanging baskets. Train leave Cairns at 8.30am and 9.30am Sunday to Friday and at 8.30am only on Saturdays. At the time of writing, the return fare was A$50. Further info at www.ksr.com.au
Other scenes on the Cairns to Kuranda section can be found in the "Savannahlander" album.
4th Sep 2004Savannahlander - Cairns to Mt Surprise
The Savannahlander is a former Queensland Rail 1960's-built "2000 Class" Railmotor powered by a 4-speed Rolls Royce engine. Railmotors (known as Silver Bullets) were once used on suburban services around Queensland. They are capable of speeds up to 100kph but on Savannahlander duties only travel between 50-60kph max. The train is mainly involved in tourism travel from Cairns to Forsayth, a distance of 423km. It leaves Cairns at 6.30am on a Wednesday, arrives at Forsayth at 5.45pm on Thursday and returns to Cairns arriving there at 6.30pm on Saturday evening following its round trip. The train is operated by the Cairns Kuranda Steam Limited Partnership. The leisurely journey between Cairns and Mt Surprise on 18/19 August is recorded here.
    4th Sep 2004Mossman Sugar CaneTrains
Mossman Mill is the most northerly sugar refining mill in Queensland. It operates about 85km of 2ft gauge track made up of 65kms of mail line with the balance being passing, shunting, road/rail terminal, delivery loops and the mill yard. The factory operates 8am Monday to 8am Saturday and locos work around the clock. The factory requires around 8000 tonnes per day, which equates to around 800 bins of cane for processing. Cane harvesting takes place between June and November and for this six diesel locos are used in the transportation operation; these are featured in the following photographs which were taken in August 2004.
